Mission
Energy Literacy Advocates (ELA) is a non-partisan, non-profit, public education organization working to improve the energy literacy of all sectors of our democracy in order to empower a comprehensive national energy policy that is responsible and sustainable. Our Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, and staff is comprised of registered Democrats, Republicans and Independents united in a non-partisan effort to inform our democracy so it can act energy-responsibly.
Our country is on an unsustainable energy use and resource path. Not having a responsible and comprehensive national energy policy threatens our nation in three major ways:
- Economic Instability
- Warped Foreign Policy and Undermined National Security
- Environmental Effects Including Global Warming
We hear a lot of rhetoric today about alternative energy solutions or increased domestic oil production, not to mention lip service and dissembling on energy issues coming from narrowly interested industry and our political leadership. Energy Literacy Advocates educates all sectors of our democracy about the mix of solutions our energy crisis will require as well as a clear picture of the barriers and investment needed to implement them.
It's one thing to create and gather information about energy, but it's quite another thing to get that information to citizens, the media, and to national policy makers in messages they can readily engage and understand. Energy issues are by nature technical, but our country simply cannot afford to leave energy policy to narrowly interested "experts" and career-centered politicians. In order to demand and support the level and the pace of progress our country must have in order to meet the national energy crisis, our democracy simply must become more informed. Empowering our democracy via major media messages and easily accessed information about energy issues and solutions is the mission of Energy Literacy Advocates.
